Wired Review: For a Good Time, Call…

Thankfully nobody has settled on an official nickname for the female buddy comedy yet a la “Bromance,” but there’s no doubt For a Good Time, Call… which arrives in theaters Friday, August 31, will be compared to the long list of films coming up that seem to be looking to cash in on last year’s Bridesmaids success.

For a Good Time, Call… has all the girliness, beauty, humor, and celebrity cameos needed to stand on it’s own though. Allie is Wired was invited to an advance press screening of the film in New York City.

The difference between For a Good Time, Call… a Sundance darling, and all the others, is that while it has lots in common with others in its genre, this sweet little indie film, isn’t trying to be any other movie than itself. Authentic and good-hearted, the film takes place in New York, where two strong-willed college enemies, Lauren (screenwriter Lauren Anne Miller) and Katie (Ari Graynor of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Celeste and Jesse Forever) reconsider their feud in order to afford the holy grail of New York City apartments. Brought together by their mutual best friend Jesse (Justin Long, doing a fabulous homage to the film’s young director, Jamie Travis) it isn’t long before Lauren discovers one of Katie’s many part-time jobs as a phone sex operator.

Deciding to cut out the middleman and start their own business together, Katie and Lauren quickly move on from their past hatred while their new venture takes off and the pair of opposites discover there’s more to their new friendship than just business success. Cue the montages, hair-dos, and matching bags, and watch the new partners bring out the best in each other. However, it isn’t long until each girl finds out that even positive change can bring about big complications, and their business and friendship is in jeopardy.

For a Good Time, Call… covers old ground in a fresh and exciting way. Women will be drawn in by the realistic dialogue and hilarious social commentary. Nuvarings, Tina Fey’s advanced virginity, and Spanx as a form of bodyguard are all fair play. Despite the racy material, the filmmakers have not set out to make a gross-out comedy. Phone-sex is actually made cute, and the adorable performances by Ari Graynor and Lauren Anne Miller make you want to pick up the phone for a chat with the fun-loving ladies on screen.

An outstanding supporting cast fills out the film, with appearances by Seth Rogen, Kevin Smith, Ken Marino, and Nia Vardalos.

In a conversation with Allie is Wired, screenwriter Katie Anne Naylon told us about their old-school method of securing big stars; writing love letters. Attached to copies of their script, the ladies wrote letters that wooed star Ari Graynor, one of Entertainment Weekly’s ‘Top 25 Funniest Actresses in Hollywood,’ and indie-film queen Nia Vardalos, star and writer of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, to be involved with For a Good Time, Call…

Penned before Bridesmaids came out, the script by college roommates Lauren Anne Miller and Katie Anne Naylon, was turned down by major studio after major studio, who loved the writing but told the girls that a female-driven comedy wouldn’t sell. It was the push needed for the girls to try and make it themselves. Choosing to make it with a small budget, a shorter time frame, an up-and-coming director, and a long list of surprising and exciting celebrity cameos, the girls secured creative control by producing the film themselves, and For a Good Time, Call… has a less slick, more down-to-earth feel than most Hollywood comedies you see these days.

Grab the girls and sneak in some candy at For a Good Time, Call… opening August 31st.
