Wired Exclusive: Douglas Sonders Talks ‘Have You Seen Molly’ (Video)

Madonna has created quite a bit of controversy recently with her “Molly” comment at the Ultra Music Festival.

Madonna responded by saying she was not making a drug reference, but was referring to her friend Cedric Gervais‘ song, “Have You Seen Molly.”

Douglas Sonders and Nicholas Cambata, the men behind the music video for the song, spoke with us about working with Gervais, their professional work and their feelings about the whole Madonna controversy.

So you filmed the “Have You Seen Molly” video, what was it like working with Cedric Gervais?

“I produced the music video under my production company, 8112 Studios. My production company co-producer, Nicholas Cambata, directed the video, but in all honesty we both wear many hats on set. We’ve filmed music videos and ads for a variety of great clients, but Cedric has been our longest-lasting and most loyal music video client. We’ve enjoyed seeing his career skyrocket these past few years and value his friendship and his faith in us to shoot all of his music videos.”

When will the full video be released?

“It is due to come out in two weeks and it can’t happen soon enough! The press and demand has been crazy. So far the teaser video alone has received over 100,000 views in the past few days.”

What are your feelings in regards to the controversy surrounding the Madonna/Molly scandal?

“First of all, I suppose any press is good press when it comes to the release of a music video. Secondly, we definitely do not want to promote drug use. The song is about an elusive beautiful girl that you see in a nightclub and can’t seem to catch. Of course the video is very provocative and sexy, but that emulates the viewer’s desire for that unobtainable one girl.”

Can you share anything about Madonna and Cedric’s friendship?

“Madonna and Cedric met a few months back in New York where she listened to some of Cedric’s upcoming songs including the Molly one. She really liked the Molly one and therefore it was no surprise to us that she shouted out what she did at the Ultra Music Festival.”

You have quite an impressive client list, who was your favorite and what was the project?

“Early on, we were hired by Monster Cable to film an ad with Lady Gaga. She’s so incredibly talented and has this indescribable magnetism and charm. Standing near her, you can’t help but being drawn to her. We’ve had some great opportunities to work with some fantastic entertainers since we started 8112 Studios.”
