Wired Exclusive: Singer Meital Dohan Talks New Single & Album (Video)
Meital Dohan is an award-winning, Israeli actress and singer. She is best known in the states for her role as Yael Hoffman in “Weeds.”
Meital has just released her first single, “Yummy” and she was kind enough to talk with me about her music and career!
She has done so much in her life and truly is a very interesting person, I was pretty excited to speak with her.
Meital, Americans might recognize you most for your role in “Weeds.” What are you working on currently?
“Right now, my first single, “Yummy,” premiered last week on MTV and it got a really great reaction. I’m really, really excited about it.”
Yes, I actually really like the song! In the music video you are seen dancing around and boxing in the nude, what would you say the message of the video is?
“Well, on one hand it kind of shows everyone’s dream to just wake up and knock people out! It’s like a surreal dream people have, but that’s not a very educational message is it? So on the other hand it’s really about how women have so many expectations of them today. They are expected to be sex objects and beautiful and yet they are supposed to be housewives and taking care of children. Also, they are expected to be as strong as men, we are supposed to be super heroes on a daily basis! So in the video I feel like Rocky, I’m fighting and trying to win everyone over.”
Now that you’ve released your first single off your debut album, “I’m In Hate With Love,” can you tell us a little bit about the it?
“The album is very exciting! I started working on it when I met Che Pope (famous producer) two years ago. Since then it has all gone so fast, I’ve had a lot of great people joining my team. I’m working on two songs with George Robertson! I’m very excited about the album; I think it’s actually going to be really good! Once we release the next single, we will focus on releasing the whole thing (the album).”
Meital, you’ve had so much success in Israel, what brought you to the United States?
“You know that’s a good question. It was basically life. I came here to a film festival in New York and met a girl who I studied acting with as a child. 12 years later we met on a plane and she told me about a friend who had a show, I really had no interest in it though. But then I called her and she wanted me to be the lead role in an off-Broadway play! After that one thing after another happened. Every time I wanted to leave something amazing would happen.”
So you’re pretty much stuck, huh?
“Haha I’m stuck here!”
So we know you’ve done acting in the past and that you are focusing on your music now, would you ever consider going back to acting?
“Well yes, I’ve never really quit acting it’s just that the music took me by storm. I’m actually working on some projects, one being a TV series. So I really haven’t taken a break from acting, I’ve just been focusing on music at the moment.”
So which would you say is your biggest passion?
“Well my real passion is to lay on the beach in Costa Rica, but that doesn’t happen. But I love what I do! I’m singing and acting and those are my two main passions. I’m also writing, but I probably wouldn’t say that’s my passion.”
Great! So do you have any final words to tell our readers?
“Yes, I want to tell the readers to have fun, to not take life so seriously and to give each other some love! That’s very important.”
