Wired Exclusive: Contest for ABC’s ‘Once Upon a Time’

One of the most exciting new shows this season, ABC‘s Once Upon a Time ties together a complex series of characters who cross over into two thoroughly differing worlds.

You’ve got the fairy tale world where characters we know and love such as Snow White, Cinderella, and Pinocchio try to fight back against the tyrannous Evil Queen. We also have the world of seeming reality, a place where the fairy stories of yore fall into a curse where no one has a happy ending.

The ingenious team behind the creation of this stellar program are the same writers who brought us the hit show LOST.

Interestingly enough, Once Upon A Time frequently pays homage to LOST using subtle references.

An example of this is when Emma and Mary Margaret are sharing a drink of whiskey together in the episode called “The Shepherd“.

The ladies are drinking MacCutcheon Scotch Whisky, which is a fictional brand of scotch that was frequently imbibed throughout the LOST series.

And I don’t know if you caught this one or not, but if you remember back to the pilot episode, the town’s clocktower is stuck at 8:15. Well, LOST followed the survivors of the crash of Oceanic flight number 815.

These are just a couple of examples of references to LOST that the creative team of Adam Horowitz, and Edward Kitsis came up with to tease and play with their audience.

If you’re into trivia as much as I am, then mosey over to Storybrooke Secrets and see what other little tidbits you can discover about the show.

Speaking of LOST references, Allie is Wired, in partnership with ABC Television are gonna hook up one of our lucky readers with an anthology of fairy tale stories.

Fairy tale references I’ve picked up from “Once Upon a Time” (best new show of the fall, by the way; love it!):

-Snow White
-Pinocchio
-Little Red Riding Hood
-The Chronicles of Narnia (the magical wardrobe)
-Rumpelstiltskin
-The Six Swans (Emma Swan’s surname)
-Sleeping Beauty
-Jack and the Beanstalk
-Hansel and Gretel
-The Three Billy Goats Gruff
-Cinderella
-King Midas
-101 Dalmatians (Archie has a dalmatian named Pongo)
-Aladdin (Mr. Gold has Aladdin’s Magic Lamp in his pawnshop)
-Beauty and the Beast (upcoming)

Disney-specific references:

-The dwarfs’ names are the same as those in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”
-Jiminy Cricket and the Blue Fairy are given their Disney names, not their names from the original story “Pinocchio”
-Leroy whistles “Whistle While You Work” from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”
-Maleficent is given the name of the fairy from Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”
-Cinderella mentions always wanting to see the lights that are sent into the sky once a year, just as Rapunzel wanted to see the annual floating lights in “Tangled”

Hmmm… that’s all I can think of right now.

Emma’s eye is focused on when she wakes up after her car crashes like Jack’s eye is focused on when he wakes up after the 815 crash.
The mayor’s house number is 108 which is not only in reference to the Swan hatch button they pressed every 108 minutes, but also the sum of the LOST numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.
Speaking of the Swan station… Emma Swan? Swan Station?
Emma’s room number at Granny’s is 4, 4 is the first of the numbers.
When the clock started moving off of 8:15 it struck 8:16 (15 and 16 are Lost numbers) and then the clock is shown near the beginning of episode 2. The time? 8:23. Another LOST number.
There is a decal in the back window of Emma’s car featuring none other than Geronimo Jackson – the madeup band from LOST who sang Dharma Lady.
Ashley (Cinderella) was dumped by her boyfriend Sean (Prince THOMAS!) when she got pregnant… Claire in Lost was dumped by her boyfriend, THOMAS, because of her pregnancy.
Henry packs Apollo bars for his joirney into the mines in Still Small Voice.
Alan Dale.
Rumplestiltskin says “Dead is dead.” Lost was well known for that saying, it was even an episode title.
In the last episode we saw, Graham wakes up and says “It didn’t feel like a dream. It felt like a memory.” In LOST Desmond wakes up in the middle of the night because of a dream, where Daniel Faraday had gone back in time to ask Desmond for help on the Island. Desmond says: “It wasn’t a dream, Pen. It was a memory.”

Well there isn’t much more I can add to the comments. I love the show and am completed addicted!

The walls where MM teaches looks like the enchanted forest with all the tree silhouettes.

Alladins Lamp appears to be in Gold’s shop.

The original name to the Cinderella story in german was: Aschenputtel.. and the real world character name is Ashley.

The Prince and the Pauper with Charmings back story..

Rumplestiltskin’s son’s name is Bae as was the doctor who delivered Sun and Jin’s baby in Lost

Seems like Rumplestiltskin pulled a “long con” just as Sawyer used to do. I guess all Lost references are not gonna be as obvious as candy bars, a bottle of whiskey, and the numbers.
