Madonna’s high profile charity, Raising Malawi, has pulled the plug on plans to construct a $15 million school for girls in the impoverished African nation, according to the New York Times.

Despite raising $18 million for the project, the foundation – which Madonna co-founded with Michael Berg of L.A.’s Kabbalah Centre International – never even broke ground on the school. It did, however, manage to spend $3.8 million, not all of which has been accounted for.

That’s par for the course for the foundation’s previous executive director, who left in October. In the wake of his departure, auditors discovered “outlandish expenditures on salaries, cars, office space and a golf course membership, free housing and a car and driver for the school’s director,” according to the Times report.

It’s no doubt an embarrassment for Madonna, who has anted up $11 million for the cause. But I guess that’s what you get when you hire your (now former) personal trainer’s boyfriend to head up a multi-million dollar charity.

The foundation’s star-studded donor list includes Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow and baseball player Alex Rodriguez as well as members of the Kabbalah Centre. Going forward, the organization has pledged to “use its money in different ways to help the poor in a country where Madonna has sought to become a major philanthropic presence,” according to the Times.

But what about the 400 Malawi girls who were supposed to attend the school?
