American Idol Rolling Stones Night

I am so thankful that American Idol tackled something other than The Beatles on the first theme night. I adore the British invasion pioneers, but I don’t think I can handle one more contestant butchering “Imagine” for the tenth time. Last year, if you recall, there was two nights of the debauchery.

American Idol Judges Table 2010

Regardless, the American Idol hopefuls tackled some Rolling Stones. Let’s start with Crystal Bowersox, who is a fan favorite, getting knocked off her pedestal a bit. She did a good rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The tricky bit is…that song is pretty untouchable (for me anyway) and she has a hype and a high level that is being set nearly impossibly high. She didn’t knock the judges socks of and therefore received some “meh…” reviews.

As Simon mentioned, Siobhan Magnus, out-performed Cyrstal last night. She was brave enough to tackle one of the more recognizable Stones song, Paint it Black. It is a dark and twisty song that takes a fortitude of massive proportions. When I her Magnus was singing it I kinda doubted her ability to pull it off. Thankfully, I was proven wrong…and we might have a dark horse.

One of the more truly surprising contestants was Aaron Kelly singing “Angie.” Another well known and loved tune that Cowell admitted to thinking Aaron would “crash and burn.” At 16 it’s a difficult song to tackle. He managed to pull it off to positive reviews. He still needs to weed out the karaoke feel and work on the Show Choir air he is projecting.

The most interesting point came when Andrew Garcia sang. And finally, thank you baby Jesus, Simon told Kara to STFU already. She was babbling about “intensity,” “connection” and blah blah blah when Simon interrupted with What was he supposed to do, come out in a tank?”

I predicted him to be going home last week and he is still around. He is in the middle and I don’t know that he will be around again. Tim Urban might finally be wearing out his tween swooning appeal. He rearranged “Under My Thumb” and it was deemed “bizarre.” Tim just laughed and stood up there looking like a model.

Thoughts? Was Simon too hard on Tim? Who will be going home?
