The Foo Fighters Respond To Kurt Cobain’s Guitar Hero 5 Avatar
Courtney Love was twittering mad yesterday over the unlocking of Kurt Cobain’s avatar in the “Guitar Hero 5″ game.
She threatened to sue Activision over the kerfuffle, saying, “and you wonder about Guitar Hero 5 disgusted? welcome to my NIGHTMARE. yeah well sue activision this is disgusting, but theres alot MORE.”

Because Courtney owns all of the rights to Kurt’s image, I initially blamed this on her. She’s done this before with his image for Doc Martens, lunchboxes, and Converse shoes. After those were released, she expressed her disdain for Kurt’s likeness being used.
The Foo Fighters released their own statement, also urging Activision to do the right thing and re-lock Kurt’s avatar. Currently, in the game, it’s an unlockable playable character. So you can have Kurt singing along to Megadeth, Rammstein, or even No Doubt.
This is a statement regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.
We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control whatsoever in that area.
While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in “re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.
It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.
I feel the same way. He wouldn’t have wanted this, I think he would have scoffed at the idea of becoming a corporate brand.
Check out the video of Kurt rapping to Public Enemy’s “Bring The Noise”:
I hope she does sue.

I personaly don’t care about Kurt being in GH5 . In fact i love it
!!!!
playing as him to fight the power is awesome!!!!!
i want Courtney to sue, Kurt Cobain Rapping is a discrace to Kurt, Nirvana, and the guitar hero industry for letting this happen. So Go ahead Courtney, make my day!!!!
I cant say i feel strongly one way or the other. I mean if Courtney owns all likeness to Kurt and his image and such, Activision would have had to buy the rights off of her to put him in the game.
So surely she has no leg to stand on…
but if they did it without asking, then sue away.
Courtney only cares about herself, her name and her fame. She killed her husband because Kurt knew she was a flake and he was planning on leaving her and taking their child. She never cared about him, she doesn’t care about her child, all she cares about is herself and getting enough money to support her heroin addiction.
She did indeed approve of having his image used in the Guitar Hero game and worked closely with Activision on everything from the way he looked to what clothes he was wearing.
It feels like the world is still in a period of mourning for this guy. COME ON! He was a loopy musician that wrote a couple of jiggy tunes in his day… don’t forget that this is the same guy that abused drugs, brought a child into his car crash of a life, and shot himself in the head. He’s not someone that needs to be continually idolized like some kind of messiah. He was just another rock star that went too far.
I think the video game is a suitable depiction… Courtney Love apparently did, too, because she didn’t object to signing away the rights. Maybe she should take this as a lesson to read legal documents before signing them. That might be over-estimating her abilities, though… can that bimbo read?
I for once agree with Courtney. The image is great and should be kept to just Nirvana songs, but seeing Kurt sing to Bon Jovi or anything other then Nirvana is just disturbing, wrong, and definitely something that Kurt would never approve of.
I agree with everyone who’s against Kurt being in guitar hero. I’m sure he’d hate it as much as the rest of us. Seeing his image poorly created on a video-game and performing songs I know he wouldn’t like is crazy. Kurt wasn’t just a rockstar, he wrote songs that changed the course of music history, and is without a doubt one of the greatest musicians the world has seen. I think guitar hero should just re-lock his character at the very least for us and for Kurt.
