David Archuleta & Kris Allen Sing The National Anthem – Videos
Season eight “American Idol” winner, Kris Allen and former contestant, David Archuleta sang the National Anthem, in separate venues, of course.

Over the weekend, fans were treated to listening to both of them sing “The Star Spangled Banner”. Archie performed the song on Saturday at the Rio Tinto Stadium, as the Real Salt Lake took on the Colorado Rapids.

The next day, Kris Allen belted out his version of the song for game two of the NBA finals with the Lakers vying against the Orlando Magic.
Check out his performance:
Who owned it? Allen or Archuleta? Or will you have to hear Adam Lambert sing it before you choose?
On a side note, Kris Allen was just signed to Jive Records! Congratulations Kris!!

They have different styles, really. I personally prefer Archuleta’s version – it’s powerful and emotional. The sound system in that stadium kind of sucked though, didn’t it? And he’s sung it better (specifically, at the Pro Bowl). Archuleta had been tweeting about his bad allergies earlier so that could explain why his breathing was off in the beginning (or he simply timed it wrong – it happens). But he has better phrasing than Allen, and his voice is strong and consistent throughout his range. Archuleta doesn’t cheat on the difficult “land of the free” line. A lot of people do what Allen did, which was to sing “land of the fray.” Open vowel sounds are a lot easier to sing in an upper register than vowel sounds like “eee”. Archuleta sings “free”.
That said, Allen did an admirable job. He isn’t a powerhouse singer, but he has a very pleasant tone, and he stays on pitch well. He chose to sing it pretty much straight, which I think is best for his voice. Only change up the anthem if you know you can do it well. Otherwise you lose the song – and the song is the most important thing. I don’t believe the anthem *has* to be sung straight, though. I’m not sure why some people believe it needs to be. The most famous version of the anthem was done by Whitney Houston and she didn’t sing it straight.
I heard Adam Lambert’s version from when he sang it at his top 3 homecoming. He pretty much sings it straight and I wasn’t impressed. He didn’t infuse any emotion into it; it was almost rote, like he was thinking “ok, let’s get this over with.” I don’t think the tone of his voice matches the song, either – but that’s just me.
David’s always amazing performing the SSB! And that closeup shot of his little face…those beautiful green eyes and flawless complexion..k now I’m of topic.
