Billy Bob Thornton gave a Joaquin Phoenix-like interview to Canadian DJ Jian Ghomeshi, while trying to promote his band, The Boxmasters.

It was said that the host was “instructed not to talk about” Billy Bob’s acting endeavors. Given that no one would’ve known who the band was, I would think it reasonable to preface his interview with the fact that he’s an Oscar winning actor.

Billy Bob was really crazy acting, not answering questions correctly, and averting to talking of monster magazines and baseball. Was that his way of protesting the interview? He didn’t even perform with his band, because he “doesn’t cart around drums at 6am.”

Last night at Massey Hall, Billy Bob took the stage and tried to give his defense. He commented on the beautiful theater and talked of Willie Nelson. He said, “It seems as if when I say something it’s in the news.”

This drew a slew of booing from the crowd, to which he continued, “Boo all you want, but I want to say something…We’re really happy to be here, but I need to say something. I talked to this a**hole yesterday.”

He went on, “I sat down and talked with this guy. He and his producers say, ‘We promise you we won’t say that’. The very first thing they said was that. I don’t like sensationalism. If you look someone in the eyes and promise them something, and you don’t do it, you don’t get the interview. That’s the way it goes.”

Think this was all calculated to get his band press?
