American Idol - Karaoke Night
By Cara | April 1, 2009
It was “American Idol” make money-money night. The contestants could sing anything they wanted provided it was a hot seller on iTunes. (Translation…we need more sellable crap to shill.)
The highlight was Kris Allen. He is pulling ahead and I hope that he continues to give Hokey-Pokey-Danny-Gokey some competition. Allen did a version of “Ain’t No Sunshine” that was the underrated hit of the show. In a show that was full of karaoke night performances, he managed to pull me out something fresh. This boy is underrated and if he could trump Danny’s constant sympathy card it would be a different game. Of course Danny once again played his dead wife card by singing “What Hurts the Most.” Same vocals, same style, different night.
Anoop Desai and his spoiled asset was there and was so forgettable and hard to like. (Not to mention his eyebrows of fury.) Lil Rounds, who is also another voice to compete with, sang a rather flat version of “I Surrender” instead of playing to her strengths. This girl has some pipes, but I agree with the judges panel (except for Kara who annoys me to the very core of my being, dear Lord Simon do something about this C U Next Tuesday) that she is having a hard time picking songs that flatter her style. When one is given the gift of the weave-o-wonder, which has magical morphing powers, you must use it to good for the world. Megan Joy, who typically looks gorgeous, was frumpy and failed once again. We have a bottom dweller here. I think monotonous is the best word here.
My girl Allison Iraheta sang a No Doubt song and her vocals were phenomenal for a 16 year old girl. However, her performance was over shadowed by the ridiculous outfit and hair-do. She looked like a Kelly Osbourne/Cyndi Lauper hybrid. Regardless, she sang “Don’t Speak” and if she would have mentioned it was a dedication to Kara she would have won the night. Scott MacIntyre cranked out yet another piano tune. If you’re gonna be behind that piano ever time I expect “Benny and the Jets” circa Elton John to be busted out at some point. I want to like the guy, but his snooze fest is fast becoming his final nail. However, I love the curly fro and it was very Seacrest-The Early Years.
Matt Giraud and his Justin Timberlake looking self sang “You Found Me” among a slew of ladies who I am guessing were paid to be there. I soon was bored and I believe my vodka coma took over. I was crudely awakened by the return of scary Adam Lambert. He tortured me with his Axl Rose rendition of “Play That Funky Music.” Last week we were treated to his talent. This was a return his screechy howl that makes me embarrassed for him. On another hair note, I love his new do and I am so glad he got rid of the flat iron look.
Adam may have the fan following to keep him from the bottom 3, but the rest are in trouble. My guess for tonight’s losers circle are: Megan Joy Corkrey, Scott MacIntyre, Anoop Desai or Matt Giraud. Dial Idol predicts Allison will be in the bottom 3 again and I am hoping that if it holds true she will be spared.
