Wired Movie Review: Get Smart

By Chinny Bini | November 15, 2008

Look! It’s the funny guy from 40 Year Old Virgin! How can you go wrong with Steve Carell (Little Miss Sunshine) and the stunning Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada) I ask you? After all, he used to be twice the size of his mother and she stays so annoyingly “thinsk” no matter how many carbs she eats!

Originally created as a 1965 TV series by the very clever Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, Get Smart 2008, directed by Peter Segal ( Naked Gun 33 1/2) and written by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember, centers on a secret agent Maxwell Smart, a.k.a. Agent 86 (Carell), who works for a secret government agency CONTROL. Anne Hathaway plays Smart’s partner, Agent 99, whose “real name” is never revealed. Carell and Hathaway prove to be an excellent team. Together, the steamy and funny 86 and 99 are in sync as Laurel and Hardy.

Yes, the humor is so obvious, but so are my whiskers!

It’s a James Bond parody for crying out loud. It has to be silly. Hunky Dwayne Johnson is great as Agent 23, to whom agent 86 aspires to become, even sexually. You can’t mess with this guy! When the headquarters are attacked by KAOS, Agent 86, finally gets a chance to show everyone his – ohm - skills.

No one can deny the film keeps viewers on their toes. It’s one thing to acrobatically avoid laser beams, I can do it, I know James Bond could do it, but can we do it with a rat crawling all over our shoulder? (Ooh…rat!)

Honestly, I absolutely loved this film. When I was just a kitten, my mother used to tell me this story of wisdom and luck stuck on a bridge… I would describe Agents 86 and 99 as wisdom and luck, working together to protect the world from harm. She has the skill, he’s got the luck.

The head of CONTROL, ‘Chief’, played by the wonderful Allan Arkin (Carell’s fellow cast member of the brilliant Little Miss Sunshine) and his nemesis, ‘Siegfried’ (Terence Stamp) who is the head of KAOS are the good and evil playing one feisty game of chess. Meow! For a little while I almost forgot about Agent 23, but you know what? Nah, not telling, see the film! The action is flawless. (Can you even say flawless when Carell is involved?) I will never know how Steve Carell pulled off that dance, but if ropes were involved they weren’t showing and I really don’t care.

  • Steve Carell … Maxwell Smart
  • Anne Hathaway … Agent 99
  • Dwayne Johnson … Agent 23
  • Alan Arkin … The Chief
  • Terence Stamp … Siegfried
  • Terry Crews … Agent 91
  • David Koechner … Larabee
  • James Caan … The President
  • Bill Murray … Agent 13
  • Patrick Warburton … Hymie

Love him, love her, loved the film. Truly entertaining! This is a decent picture folks, if you can’t see that “use your peripherals”!

I give this four Chinny Bini paws!!!!
