Wired Movie Review: Max Payne

By Chinny Bini | October 24, 2008

I’m an East Coast cat and I love Mark Wahlberg, so I can’t diss this film even if I wanted to. I don’t want to, because I enjoyed it. I’m a photographer at heart and visually, this film is a gem.

I don’t have plausible thumbs, but one of my favorite games to play is Max Payne.

Max Payne is about a New York city cop, Mark Wahlberg, who teams up with a Russian assassin, played by Mila Kunis, against the police, the mob and other enemies. Even the toughest critics must admit that the film does the game justice.

Mark Wahlberg is a serious actor and a natural badass without any need to try too hard. Payne is not Spiderman. The story of Max Payne is just that - a story. The mood is slow, dark and interesting. I for one think the picture worked. In the footsteps of Sin City, Max Payne is a contemporary film noir. It starts of slow, but the pace does pick up and half way trough it’s non stop Wahlberg action. Milla Kunis delivers a character that is quite different from every role she’s played in the past. I found it refreshing to see her play a character with depth.

Fans of the game will enjoy seeing their favorite hero come to life and those unfamiliar with the game might just be tempted to tackle the virtual world of Payne. If you’re looking for a big flashy blockbuster this picture is not for you.

  • Mark Wahlberg … Max Payne
  • Mila Kunis … Mona Sax
  • Beau Bridges … BB Hensley
  • Ludacris … Jim Bravura (as Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges)
  • Chris O’Donnell … Jason Colvin
  • Donal Logue … Alex Balder
  • Amaury Nolasco … Jack Lupino
  • Kate Burton … Nicole Horne
  • Olga Kurylenko … Natasha
  • Rothaford Gray … Joe Salle
  • Joel Gordon … Owen Green
  • Jamie Hector … Lincoln DeNeuf
  • Andrew Friedman … Trevor
  • Marianthi Evans … Michelle Payne
  • Nelly Furtado … Christa Balder

I give it: Three Chinny Bini paws and a scratch!

Really cool movie with tons of killing, shooting and male testosterone rolled into what many critics consider a flop. I don’t think this is all that bad. Mark Wahlberg is amazing and the scenes and graphic selections were spot on.

I HYPED Max Payne on EverHYPE and scored it 84%, which I think is very accurate.

If you get on there, rate me a 5 on it and request friendship.
