Wired Music: M.I.A. Returns with Clothing Line
By Alyk | September 16, 2008
M.I.A. might be retired from the music biz, but she still has money-making on her mind. The Sri Lankan singer, real name Maya Arulpragasam, recently launched her own clothing line. The pieces, inspired by M.I.A.’s onstage tour gear, are in her trademark bright colors and bold graphics. Fans can choose from leggings, bomber jackets, and T-shirts.
In an interview with WWD, M.I.A. explained another benefit her clothing line offers: instant anti-theft devices.
“With my stuff, because everything’s really bright, if you lose it or someone steals it, you can see it from miles away and you can be like, ‘Oy! Give me my shirt back!’”
M.I.A. gave a sneak peek at the line in a video called “Real Pirates of the Caribbean.” The video, posted on her website, featured some of M.I.A.’s friends (and a couple of horny dogs) jumping around while sporting some of the pieces.
