Wired Music: Carla Bruni - More than France’s First Lady

In the US, Carla Bruni is known for one thing: hooking up with rich and powerful dudes. In her forty years, Italian-born Carla engaged in relationships with several well-known men, including Donald Trump, Eric Clapton, and Mick Jagger. Mick’s ex-wife Jerry Hall publicly acknowledged that Mick’s affair with Carla caused the end of their marriage.

Earlier this year, Carla married French president Nicolas Sarkozy, making her less-known as an adulterer, and more known as a supermodel who hooked up with the most powerful man in France.

Amid the controversy, onlookers tend to overlook a significant part of Carla’s life: her music career. She left the world of modeling in 1997 to focus on singing and songwriting. She released her first disc, Quelqu’un m’a dit, in French-speaking countries, and her 2007 disc, No Promises, featured lyrics in French and English.

The first song I heard from Carla was “Those Dancing Days Are Gone” from No Promises. I couldn’t believe such a beautiful, well-crafted song came from someone who, at the time, was only known as Mick Jagger’s mistress. Since then, I’ve become a fan, so I was relieved to learn her position as the First Lady of France wouldn’t slow down her music career.

Carla released her third disc, Comme si de rien n’était, or As If Nothing Ever Happened, on August 5 in the US. The new disc is a bit more mainstream and pop than her previous efforts, but it’s still an admirable effort from the first First Lady to have a music career. The lyrics and the attitude are strongly French, so if American audiences can overcome the language barrier, they might find themselves with the perfect soundtrack to their late-summer dinner parties. Break out the brie.

Check out the disc’s first single, “Tu Es Ma Came,” in the player below.
