Thomas Beatie Gives Birth

thomas-beattie-1.jpg

Thomas Beatie has given birth to a baby girl. Beattie is the first man to give birth to a baby. The 34 year old man was born a female, but after having a sex change is now legally a male. He has appeared on Oprah with his story of overcoming bigotry, ignorance and having a child despite the odds.

Thomas, formerly known as Tracy Lagondino, became pregnant and battled doctors refusing to care for him during his pregnancy. His pregnant transgender status outraged conservatives and started a wild fire of legal, political and social confusion and (for some stupid reason) outrage.

Regardless of what others think, Beatie and his partner welcomed a baby girl on Sunday. They managed a rather guarded delivery at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon. Obviously a caesarean was done and father and baby are currently resting and doing well.

“A woman who appears to be a nurse carried a combination car seat-baby carrier with a white blanket over it. Beatie walked a few yards behind her. The new dad walked easily, although he appeared tired, and despite the warm weather he wore a white hooded sweatshirt along with sunglasses and black shorts. Someone opened the car door for him.”

Congratulations to them all and well wishes! I can totally get behind a pregnant man.

“Pregnant man” makes it sound much more sensational than it is. Regardless of how he chooses to live, Beatie has the chromosomal structure and internal reproductive organs of a female. He will always be genetically female, regardless of how he appears cosmetically.

I wish him and his child all the happiness in the world, but I don’t see why people have to act like it’s some kind of scandal and/or medical miracle.

My warmest wishes to the little one. But still there is a thing I don’t fully understand… what the child will be calling the parent – Mom or Dad and how would she feel herself (while growing) with crowds of people asking her about her birth?

imustsay | July 4th, 2008

this is just sick and wrong, she wanted to be a dude, i think that you should’nt be able to have kids after that. can someone say “i want attention”?

Stoobs | August 25th, 2008

I agree with imustsay,

If you agree to a sex change you need to be psychologically fit for one first. This is evidence that Thomas was not ready for one. You need to accept the life of a male if you are to become one, and like it or not men can’t and shouldn’t have babies (most men like it not surprisingly!)

Ultimately, thankfully there appears to be no damage to anybody other than the credibility of sex change patients, which is a real shame as it shouldn’t be the case.

It is yet to see if the testosterone levels while the baby was in the womb cause any lasting damage to it’s development. Lets hope that the family can lead a normal life from now.

Agreed with Stoobs.

I’m a transguy, and I hate that it feels like Beatie is dragging my manhood and my good name through the mud. I would HATE to have kids, because #1, high levels of female hormones make me suicidal, #2, it would seem to me that a Kraken were summoned into my belly, and #3, I already have cats, so I don’t need kids.

I’m still in the psychiatric screening phase, even though several psychiatrists have given me the GID diagnosis (I didn’t go through on them because I ran out of insurance at the time). I will admit to having a neurological condition, which is why my screening phase is taking 18 months rather than the standard six. I personally would like to smack the doctor that gave Beatie a go-ahead with his transition. If I can see that he’s technically ineligible for a GID diagnosis because he seems to have a personality disorder, why couldn’t the shrink?

I believe that these people who are having this baby are doing it for publicity rather than love. If it was for love than they would adopt becuase honetly theres no point to embarras yourselves and your future baby just to have it. Second, the parents have officially ruined this kids life, she won’t have friends nor a normal life. If kids can make fun of you for shirt then your screwed with this. Lastly don’t you need a male donor for a baby, if neither have the proper organs then whose the father?

He’s not the first, by far. He’s just the first to go public, while dragging the trans community through shit to get him famous.
I have absolutely nothing against his choice to have a child even after transition, he just put his foot in his mouth too many times and didn’t take responsibility for the type of press the trans community now has to deal with.
