Katy Perry Still Rules Charts, Strip Clubs

In the weeks since its release, Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” maintained a spot on Billboard’s charts. The twenty-three year old singer released One of the Boys last month, and, while sales of the first single “Ur So Gay” started off sluggishly, they picked up after “Kissed” burned up airwaves.

The singer released her first disc in 2001 under the name Katy Hudson. After the sixteen year old’s Christian-oriented album failed to climb the charts, Capitol Records demanded a makeover. With a name change and a new image, Katy began working with producers for Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, and Kylie Minogue.

The makeover worked; Katy shocked her parents and fans with her gay-themed “I Kissed a Girl.” The new image attracted boyfriend/Gym Class Heroes singer Travis McCoy, and when she joined him on the Warp Tour, she gained a new genre of fans.

One group Katy hasn’t impressed is exotic dancers. When I asked my homegirl Annisa about the most over-played songs in the club, she quipped, “Right now… this awful song… I have no idea who sings it, but the chorus is, ‘I kissed a girl and I liked it.’ Ugh…HATE it!” Poor kid.

Yeah, she’s talking about you, Katy. I think it’s time to release a new single so we can all move on. But for now, let’s take another listen to “I Kissed a Girl.”
