Wired Music: Glastonbury Wrap-Up

Fans descended onto the fields of Pilton, UK for the Glastonbury Festival. The annual music festival featured hundreds of performers getting together last weekend for three days of music, mud, and drama.

Friday started out drama-free with Kings of Leon, MGMT, and Santogold, among others. Kate Moss braved the rain to watch boyfriend Jamie Hince perform with his band, The Kills, while her ex-boyfriend, Pete Doherty, played a solo show on a separate stage. Kate later hung out backstage with Lily Allen, and somehow avoided Pete all night.

Jay-Z and Amy Winehouse headlined the show Saturday, although Amy’s arrival was in doubt until the last minute. Amy finally arrived, starting out a decent performance on the Pyramid stage, and then things went awry. Amy became angry with the crowd of 180,000 for no obvious reason, then spat her gum at them. Later, while belting out a few tunes from Back to Black, Amy got pissed at some dude in the front row. Without missing a beat of “Rehab” she threw several punches at the poor guy. Before leaving the stage, Amy called Kanye West a “cunt,” and announced husband Blake Fielder-Civil would be released from prison in two weeks.

Jay-Z took the stage after Amy, and neither spat on the audience, nor punched anyone. His wife Beyonce watched from the wings as he performed an odd rendition of the Oasis classic “Wonderwall,” before launching into an AC/DC-inspired re-working of “99 Problems.”

The Verve ended things on Sunday, starting the set with a shout-out to the previous night’s headliner, Jay-Z, before frontman Richard Ashcroft announced, “[T]onight it’s rock n’ roll!” The band sent fans home happy with a well-polished version of the 90’s classic “Bittersweet Symphony.”
