Brokeback Mountain Opera
By Cara | June 9, 2008
I couldn’t make this shiz up. The film that starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger will be transformed into an opera. The musical version of the Brokeback Mountain centered around two men falling love only to meet a tragic end is set to debut in 2013.
“The New York City Opera commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose a show based on the 1997 short story — which was turned into the 2005 Oscar-winning movie starring Heath Ledger (who died in January) and Jake Gyllenhaal.”
Gerard Mortier announced the plans on Sunday that the project has a green light and Wuorinen will be comprising the music for the opera.
“Ever since encountering Annie Proulx’s extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so,” Wuorinen, 70, said in a statement.”
I say huzza! I loved the film and thought it was a story that was both compelling, heart breaking and totally hot. Yes, I know I just ruined a bit of my integrity with the last comment, but what can I say…I am shallow.
