SpeedRacer… sucked?

By Elena | May 10, 2008

The anticipated SpeedRacer, the film taking almost $200 million to make… has bombed!

Yup, the premiere only made 6.6 million dollars, a massive flop for Hollywood box office movies. Warner Bros. had reportedly expected the film to earn in the 40 million mark, but is now faced with earnings in a lower 20 million.

Just saw speed racer with my kids and it is great.

Iron Man might take some viewership away, but it is a fantastic movie.

Sorry, I am reposting due to typos in the original entry above (some probably remain!):

It was not too bad, and I don’t think the movie intended to be racist. After all, the Wachowski’s, of whom I am not a fan, did cast black actors in very crucial roles in the Matrix (the Oracle and Morpheus). To be fair, the cartoon on which the movie was based did not feature black characters either and this film aspired to be faithful to the source material. Racial slurs? please be a little more specific. In my opinion, I’d rather not see token black characters in films if that’s all they are there for. If the actor is hired for his/her ability to play a part, or if the character to be depicted is black, then it makes sense. To put a black person in a movie to make a political point, is quite silly really.
Anyway, the Speed Racer movie was just like the cartoon, and the film had no chance with adults, as it was clearly targeted at children who still play with Hot Wheels. Personally, I thought it was quite entertaining, and found it surprising that the Wachowski’s could come up with anything half decent. I was never a fan of the Matrix movies, and went to see this film with every expectation of hating it. Maybe it was a little overlong though. I have not seen a movie that has flabbergasted me like this visually for many years. The special effects were simply stunning, and having seen a digital presentation of this film at the Empire Leicester Square in London, I was left completely speechless. The film creates a wonderful sense of unreality, the people cannot exist in the real world, and the universe of Speed Racer just puts the audience in an alternate dimension in which anything could happen. The limitations on imagination are totally removed, and the pop gloss Technicolor vividness and sheer power of the images that fly past is defintely a treat. This is escapism, like Indiana Jones, and and if audiences expect something else, these are the wrong films from which to seek the meaning of life.
Also, the Michael Giacchino score was sensational, and it is a real pity that his orchestration of the Speed Racer theme was not used in the movie. It is on the soundtrack CD and is excellent.
The box office performance was dampened by the hype, and this film seemed to have been designed to sell toys, and audiences were probably sickened by the premise of seeing a very long (and shameless) Hot Wheels commercial. Studios should go easy on the merchadising because it can create the complete opposite impression than they hope. Simply because an advert catches attention doesn’t mean the viewers didn’t find it intrusive, manipulative and a waste of their time.
Commercials don’t always succeed, so being subtle is better. I await further comments!!!!
