Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in Bernard and Doris

By Cara | February 7, 2008

Amidst the Writers Strike and lack of television that doesn’t involve reality being tossed in as second string entertainment comes HBO to the rescue.

Bernard and Doris” stars Ms. Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes. We are all starving for something, anything really, that can bring us back to the couch. Temporarily anyway.

Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in Bernard and Doris

HBO delivers a made for television movie that isn’t your typical Lifetime Channel babble on the strength of a woman or women. It plays out much like how a good book reads. Susan Sarandon, who makes a great blonde, is an over the top eccentric millionaire that knows how to have a good time. Doris Duke, who actually did roam the earth, is no stranger to booze and dealing with vultures after her cash.

After firing her present butler for “ice cold” cantaloupe being served for breakfast, Ralph Fiennes comes to the rescue. The loveable and openly gay Bernard Lafferty obviously doesn’t fit in her world. The recovering alcoholic quickly becomes fond of Doris and her fabulous array of jewelry and couture. Their relationship quickly goes from employee/employer to gal pals that don’t just want each other around, but need each other. They actually function better together than most married straight couples.

I originally underestimated Ralph. I thought all I would be able to picture was Harry Potter’s Lord Voldemort bringing Susan her Irish coffee. How quickly I was proved wrong. He proved tender and vulnerable with a Mrs. Doubtfire quality which included cross dressing.

It was entertaining without the use of over the top vulgarity and cars blowing up simply to hold your attention. While the plot could have been tweaked a bit, the heart of what is being conveyed is worth every moment.

The veterans of Hollywood premiere “Bernard and Doris” on HBO February 9th at 8 p.m.
